Trump should boost morale, not complain

On Saturday, the president sent out 18 twitter posts concerning the situation in Puerto Rico. One would probably assume that our leader sent out words of hope and encouragement for the citizens, but that was not the case.

For 11 hours, Trump only cared to tweet about criticizing the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, for her “poor leadership ability,” accusing Democrats of telling the mayor to be “nasty to [him],” saying that the citizens of Puerto Rico wanted “everything to be done for them,” and ranting about “fake news” once again.

While Mayor Cruz did snap at Trump and his administration for presenting their situation as a “good news story,” what’s the point in snapping back at her? Cruz is the person living there and having to see her people suffer first hand, every day. Calling her a bad leader doesn’t accomplish anything, especially when the primary reason Trump criticized her was because she said something about his administration.

Instead of supporting the Puerto Rican citizens in these trying times after the destruction that Hurricane Maria wreaked on the country, Trump decided to spew only negative things. Not only were his comments uncalled for, but they do absolutely nothing to help the current situation. He should be solving problems, not creating new ones through his insults and accusations or simply tweeting about them. While we are helping our fellow citizens with the disaster, why can’t Trump spread some love and support through his beloved Twitter account for once?

Why insult the people of Puerto Rico, calling them lazy, when they are working hard to improve their situation? And if he felt that way then why not encourage, not demoralize, their effort and help them to persevere? In a time when a part of our nation needs support and assistance Trump acts like the victim, and centers everything around himself and not the actual dilemma that so many people are struggling through.

Do we want our leader, the face of our country, to be someone who whines on Twitter about how he is being mistreated when we have citizens scavenging for essentials, such as clean water? The focus should be shifted from Trump’s wounded pride and accusations to discussing how to assist our people.
