Disney’s first LGBTQ storyline

Andi Mack is a show on Disney Channel about ‘tweens who are coming of age and trying to figure out who they are. The creator of the show, Terri Minsky has ensured that the show has overall respect for humanity and it is appropriate for all audiences.

Since the premiere of ‘Andi Mack’ was aired in March, it has become the top series of the year throughout the country. It is also reaching top charts for Disney VOD, Disney Channel UK, and the DisneyNOW app.

The new season premiered on Oct.27th including a storyline that was long overdue for the Disney corporation. The young female lead role of Andi Mack was starting to develop feelings for Jonah, a boy in her class. However Mack’s friend Cyrus was also having a hard time grappling his feelings towards Jonah.

In the season premiere, he confided in a close friend Buffy who then reassures him that his feelings are valid and don’t make him weird. Following episodes will be included throughout the season, including him trying to handle how to tell his girlfriend Iris about his feeling towards Jonah.

Overall, the storyline is setting a path to Cyrus’ self-discovery leading up to him coming to terms that he is gay.

Andi Mack is reflecting actual real life scenarios and lives. Since television is supposed to reflect real life and with more young people coming out as LGBTQ around the country, they too deserve to see their life depicted.

The organization’s president and CEO said, “Disney has been a leader in LGBTQ inclusion and there are so many young people who will be excited to see Cyrus’ story unfold.”
