REVIEW: Daryl Dixon has his own show?

Warning: Before talking about the show, I would like to say mature audiences are advised, there is blood, violence and foul language.

(Spoilers ahead)

“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” is a continuation of AMC’s popular show “The Walking Dead.” The show only has 6 episodes as of writing and has a 7.8 rating on IMDb. It stars Norman Reedus playing as the main character. The story is about Daryl Dixon, a survivor of a zombie outbreak, who is trying to return home to America after accidently finding his way to Paris. The world is a post-apocalyptic world which is overrun by zombies that are called “walkers.”

While being the 5th installment to the series, it  still able to hold its own and is far from the worst show. Other installments are “The Walking Dead” ”Fear the Walking dead” ”Beyond The Walking Dead” “Dead City” and “Dead Summit” this later february.

The show stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Laïka Blanc-Francard, Adam Nagaitis, and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi as main characters.

Since the main show, Daryl has been looking for his friend who sacrificed himself many years ago named Rick Grimes. While he is not in the show, there are plans for his own story next February. While Daryl is looking around he runs out of gas and has to do some work for some people and for this group. I do think it was weird that Daryl found such a large group of survivors, considering that there’s a low population of survivors left.

Daryl works for the survivors, but when he tries to protect an innocent teen, he gets thrown onto a boat. He escapes and gets on a small boat and drifts blindly until he reaches paris.

It’s fairly weird how they don’t show what happened in that time and the process but it does show him coming. His last chance of hope is send a message saying this is Daryl from the Commonwealth, the biggest community left in America. He wants to get home and wants to let his people know he tried to find Rick Grimes.

The aspects of the show are amazing. The acting and details they put in the makeup and scenery is incredible. Norman Reedus is worth 40 million dollars because his acting is so good. He is able to stay physically and mentally fit on and off camera. Him being 54 years of age is incredible for his acting even his name being on the hollywood walk of fame is incredible. For example, when being ambushed and outnumbered, his first reaction is to react with violence, but when he sees the fight won’t end well, he protects the people he cares about. Daryl as a character can balance being cool under pressure and hot headed.

The show we are introduced to a boy named Laurent who is special because of his ability to be immune to the walker virus and is somewhat capable of communicating with them. This is because when he was being born, his mother was a walker and this got in his blood system and wasn’t enough to kill him but made him immune to it.

This may sound familiar because a similar thing happened in the popular show “The Last of Us,” where the main character was born and their mother was just previously bitten by a zombie. The similarities they share so close that it feels like plagiarism, which is a negative. I would’ve liked a more original concept.

While I dont have any major complaints for the show I  have one, I think the main enemy named Cordon gets a hold of Daryl and as he is about to kill him, he says “Next time”. I know they can’t kill Daryl, at least not yet, but it should have been more dramatic. They killed Cordon’s younger brother and he doesn’t really get revenge for it. The show writers were making a bad decision on that.

An interesting scene happens at the end of episode 6, where during the show Daryl talks about his grandfather who was in World War II who he said never came back and perished. At the end of the episode we get an answer. While Daryl was walking in Paris, he finds a graveyard of WWII soldiers. He looks at the graves and one says “William T Dixon,” his grandfather. For the first and only time in the show, Daryl sheds a tear. This is something special because he is a man that shows no emotion, but like few, he has weakness to the emotions of others. He gives a moment of silence and wipes his tears and moves on. A little detail that is a significant moment in “Walking Dead” history.

While I will not spoil too many episodes, I will say this. The show is packed with action and amazing acting. The show has emotions while it’s not overwhelming. I feel like Norman Reedus did an amazing acting job and is one of the best roles he’s ever played. The actors said they had to put down other projects to put all their focus on this show. With a good rating and compliments from other directors, the show has been a success.I do feel like the action could have picked up faster or more flashbacks. It would have made it better.

I would say it is a big step away from the normal show and other spinoffs. I would not give it a perfect rating, but will recommend it if you’re a fan of any of the AMC shows. Overall the action, story, acting, drama, effects and development I would rate this show an 8.1 out of 10. If there were more episodes or returning actors I would rate it higher. But we will have to wait for season 2 to come out. Until then I would recommend this show and its predecessors.
