Circle of Friends from the start of this school year has been paring students that have disabilities with mentors at lunch. They do this to branch out their horizon. Not only is their horizon being branched out, but long lasting friendships are being made. These friendships are strengthened every Wednesday during lunch. The mentors love doing this because it mostly strikes gold with the disabled.
Selina Vargas, sophomore, states that, “My new friend has really helped me in meeting new people.” On Wednesdays, Vargas and her mentor walk around and go up to other groups to socialize. When she is not with a group of friends, her mentor talks about how their day is going and what all they have done.
Barbara Anaya, the adviser of Circle of Friends, said, “Since Circle of Friends has started I have noticed that they know more people, they are more comfortable, and are more communicative. Together, the kids will say, hey there goes my friend, as they are pointing them out. It brings joy to see an interaction like this being made. I believe it builds social skills, long lasting friendships, and a solid good community for Stagg.”
As a community, it’s our job as Stagg Delta Kings to come together and strengthen the bond between us to branch out and open up our horizons, even if it is not the ideal group of people we hang out with. So here is your turn to go make a friend and make a difference.
