Brent Faiyaz, whose real name is Christopher Brent Wood is an R&B singer and songwriter known for his smooth vocals and emotional style of music. He grew up in Maryland and became interested in music as a teenager, deciding he wanted to take it seriously and pursue it as a career. One of the reasons he started making music was because he wanted to express personal experiences and emotions in a creative way. In an interview about his music, Brent Faiyaz explained that he wants his music to feel honest and personal “I just make music about my life and what I’m going through’’. This focus on real emotion is a big part of what makes his music relatable to listeners.
Before becoming widely known, he moved to Los Angeles to focus on his music career and collaborate with other artists. He first gained major attention as a part of a group called Sonder and later became successful as a solo artist. Brent Faiyaz is known for blending R&B, soul, and alternative sounds, which gives his music a relaxed but emotional listening experience.
Some artists are known for creating music that feels emotional and personal, and Brent Faiyaz is one of those artists. With the release of ‘Icon’, he once again brings out his smooth music style, even though it doesn’t always reach the same level as some of his past albums.
White Noise
One of the songs on the new album is ‘White Noise’, which was my least favorite track. Unlike most of the other songs, this one does not include vocals or lyrics. Instead , the focus of the track is mainly on instrumental sounds, especially a violin that carries most of the melody.
While the violin creates an atmospheric sound, the song felt slower and less engaging compared to the others on the album. The production still sounds clean and fits the mood of the album, but without vocals it didn’t stand out as much to me. While listening, the track feels peaceful and almost like background music you might hear while studying or relaxing. Compared to the more vocal songs on the album, it feels quieter and less emotional, which makes it stand out but also makes it a little less memorable. Because of that, it ended up being the song I liked the least.
Butterflies:
Another song on the album is ‘Butterflies’, which I thought was okay. This track feels more like the typical sound that Brent Faiyaz is known for, with smooth vocals and related R&B production. The beat is soft and Harmonious:, which helps create a calm and emotional atmosphere while listening.
One thing that stands out about the song is how laid back it feels. Brent Faiyaz’s voice blends well with the instrumental, and the production allows the vocals to stay in the center of the track. Some of the lyrics focus on emotions and relationships, which adds to the reflective mood of the song. Lines about love and personal feelings help give the song meaning and make it feel emotional for the listener. These lyrics match the calm instrumental and help create a relaxed but thoughtful atmosphere while listening.
However, even though the song sounds good, it doesn’t feel as memorable as some of his stronger songs from the past albums. It’s enjoyable and fits well with the album but it doesn’t have the same impact as some better tracks.
Four seasons:
My favorite song from this album is ‘Four Seasons’. This song stood out the most because of its stronger production and the way everything comes together to create a more complete listening experience. The instrumental has more depth than some of the other tracks, which makes the song feel more dynamic and interesting.
Brent Faiyaz’s vocals stand out more in this song. His voice carries emotion and works well with the rhythm of the beat, which makes the track feel more engaging from beginning to end. While listening to this track, it feels more emotional and engaging compared to the calmer songs on the album. The fuller sound and stronger production make the listener feel more connected to the music and give the song a more powerful impact.
Compared to the other songs on the album, this one feels more memorable and polished. Because of the stronger production and overall sound, it ended up being the best song on the album in my opinion.
Overall, ‘Icon’ was a decent album. It has the smooth R&B sound that he is known for, and many songs create a relaxed listening experience. In many ways, this album is more of the same sound from his previous music, for better or worse However, compared to some of his past releases, this album didn’t stand out much to me. I personally feel as though he has released better albums.
I would recommend this album to fans of Brent Faiyaz or people who enjoy calm R&B music, but listeners who want something very new might choose to skip it. While the album sounds good and has some strong moments, it does not stand out as much as his past releases.
