Throughout California there are roughly over 800,000 student athletes, some of which are in clubs as well as those who have jobs. Senior Emily Valenica is both a student athlete and an entrepreneur. Valencia is a cheeleader and also owns her own cookie business.
What a day looks like for Valenica seems like a busy day to anyone else but just a normal one for her.
5:00am/6:00am
Valencia wakes up and begins to start making s’mores cookies which is one of her most popular ones, they are the only ones baked in the morning so they are gooey and soft. Valencia has a ranging menu including s’more cookies, macadamia nut cookies, snickerdoodle cookies, and of course the classic chocolate chip cookies.
Valencia said, “If I have a big order of s’mores I’ll wake up earlier around 5:00 am to make sure I have enough time.”
7:30-8:0am
She spends this time getting ready for the day making sure she has everything packed and ready to go.
Valencia explained since she is a cheerleader she makes sure she has her stuff like her practice clothes and cheerleader shoes ready because her practice is every day after school.
8:30am-3:35pm
Valencia attends school like anyone else at Stagg, though she makes sales at almost every period of the day, mostly selling out at lunch.
6:30-7:00pm
After she gets out of school, Valencia attends practice for about three hours and gets home around 6:30. She says she takes a little break from everything and starts baking around 7:30pm.
Being an entrepreneur doesn’t stop Valencia from being a student though, while the cookies are baking, she typically does homework to make sure she isn’t behind on work if she has any.
9:30-10:00pm
At this point, this is usually when her day ends, with baking cookies and homework finished. Valenica ends her day here so she can get up bright and early to start again.
Valencia expressed a final message to other student-athletes as well as entrepreneurs. “Stay on track in school especially during school hours, because it’s really easy for your grades to drop.” She also mentioned that having good time management and staying on track with it is what is important and will help you out.
