Soul Train Awards: Winners

Presented by BET, The Soul Train Awards aired Sunday, November 26th. It accomplished honoring and celebrating people in black entertainment. As the expectations were high for Erykah Badu after being the host in previous years, she still decided to host for the third year. It was not at all a disappointment, as she made sure to bring comedy and even made jokes about the former Weinstein Company co-founder, Harvey Weinstein.

As for the awards, it was a big night for singer Bruno Mars. He swept five categories. The awards he received included best dance performance, song of the year, album/mixtape of the year, video of the year, and best R&B/Soul male artist.

Solange was leading nominees by being in seven different categories, but unfortunately only walked away with one. The Ashford & Simpson songwriter’s award was given to her because of her work with Troy L. John and Raphael Saadiq on “Cranes in the Sky.”

For artist Sza, it was a great night. She was able to take home two awards including best R&B/Soul female artist and best new artist.

Performances included the third annual Lady of Soul honorees SWV performing a couple of their top hits including “I’m So Into You” and “Anything”. The set ended with appearances of Method Man and U-God.

As part of a tribute before singer Toni Braxton took the stage, singers Jessie J., Luke James, and Ro James performed a medley of one of her songs.
