Junior Lucianne Gomez isn’t necessarily the sportiest person around, but she loves to wrestle. She started when she was a sophomore, not knowing anything at all about it, and she instantly fell in love. When asked how she actually got into wrestling, she says “I was just in class one day and my friend was telling me how much fun wrestling was, and she told me I should try it. So I did.”

Learning how to wrestle isn’t the easiest sport to learn. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, like all the dedication and hard work that you have to put into the sport, but it’s the most fun you’ll ever have.”

Gomez is also a relatively small person, so when she first started to wrestle, she was pretty nervous. “Since I’m small, I was really scared that all the kids would be so much bigger than I was and that there would be no one in my weight class, but there are people that are all shapes and sizes there.”

Gomez says that you really do gain a second family from wrestling. When you need help or you need to call someone on the team for a ride, they’re always there for you. “There have been times where I’ve needed some advice on what I was doing, and the kids who have been wrestling longer than me were a really big help.”

Gomez says that she was never really too big into sports, but she just decided to try wrestling for the fun of it.  She also says that it really opened her eyes to how hard people who have been playing sports all their lives have it. Her advice for people who are scared to try wrestling she says “You shouldn’t be scared to try it. You will really gain a family. It’ll be one of the best things you ever decided to do.”
