Indie rock band “The Marias” released the highly anticipated single “Back to Me” on Thursday, April 3, on all streaming platforms including Spotify. The band teased this song when playing it during Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour back in December.
A thing you need to know before listening to “Back to Me” is that they were messing around with new synth sounds and chords. When lead singer Maria Zardoya heard it, she quickly “went into the vocal booth and the lyrics came out faster than any other song, as if it wrote itself,” according to a post on Instagram.
Since the band was messing around with new sounds and chords, “Back to Me” sounds different compared to their other songs. The track is 3 minutes and 37 seconds long and has its own music video which helps us visualize the lyrics. In the background of this set you can see what appears to be the sea which makes sense because the lyrics talk about the speaker building a house for their partner across the sea.
When listening to the song, the vibe I get is missing an ex-relationship with its emotional lyrics that help add on to it. The song opens up with “Promise I’m changing… But if I would see you, I’d fall apart.” It is also important to note that when opening up with these lyrics the room is dark but then gradually gets brighter and brighter.
There were instruments like drums, keyboards, and guitars. Throughout the whole song, the main instrument you can hear is electric guitar and drums. The guitar has a lot of power to it and feels like a booming sound. The drums combine to a fast and powerful beat, empowering the lyrics, “I’d be there in a hurry baby come back to me.”
The lyrics and the vibes you get from it make it a good song to listen to on a bad day or when you are alone and just thinking. The song puts on a huge emphasis of wanting this ex to come back to you, “Is she all that you want? Is she all that you need? I’d be there in a hurry, baby come back to me.” The way that Maria sings the lyrics helps empower the meaning behind these lyrics, with a strong and monotone voice.
Another new song called “Nobody New” was released that same night, and during their performance at Coachella. Zardoya also left audiences with a mysterious statement, “If love is worth the pain, and I don’t know, I think it is, but let’s find out together in October. This could mean an album announcement, an EP, or a tour.
