As interest in the health field rises more and more, students have become very intrigued about what jobs or opportunities they can get from there. Mediclub is the place for students who are interested in the medical field.
Mediclub president Syrell Gatan has been around the medical field her whole life, considering most of her family members are either doctors or nurses. Growing up with that background caused Gatan to want to become a doctor. “My parents, grandparents, and even cousins are doctors or nurses so growing up I wanted to be a doctor myself,” Gatan said.
She also says she noticed there was no club nor organization at Stagg to help students pursue their own passion for the medical field so she started one, and as a bonus it looks great on college resumes.
Mediclub has many promising opportunities for students to get in their experience for the field as well as volunteering hours. Gatan said she has a plan on getting medical organizations like the Red Cross involved, so the students can become volunteers and log those hours for their college transcripts.
“I want people to explore the various fields in medicine that’s not only doctors or nurses,” Gatan said, “but you can be a radiologist and other stuff like that.”
Gatan has been planning for this club since sophomore year but wasn’t confident that anyone would be interested. Nonetheless, she knew she had to create the club in order for her to achieve her dream. “I had a revelation that I really wanted to do something. If I wanted to go to Stanford, I had to make something of my own name,” said Gatan.
After she asked people on social media, she had enough support to talk to her teacher, and now advisor, Ashley Kramer who happily obliged.
“Truthfully, this was not generated by me at all. Truthfully Syrell, one of my current anatomy students asked me if I would be the advisor for this club,” said Kramer. She said the students came to her wanting to get this club started and asked her if she would be the advisor for the club.
Kramer sees the value in starting this club because many students do have an interest in the health field. “I can see there being not only just a need but also like a want and a desire to want this on campus,” Kramer said.
Gatan has promising plans for the Mediclub, which involves getting animal shelters and Red Cross involved so that students have a chance to expand their knowledge on which field they want to pursue.
Gatan herself volunteers at an animal shelter, the shelter themselves had mentioned that they needed more volunteers so Gatan had taken it into consideration and took it as one of the main reasons why to start the club.
After the second meeting Gatan voiced she was very happy many students came and were interested in the club. She also stated that she did not expect that many to show up and could tell the club is going in the right direction. “I wasn’t actually expecting it to be like that, I was so surprised.” She stated when asked how she felt about the meeting.
