WEEKLY SPORTS FOCUS: Gabrielle Riego

The birdie soaring through the air and her eyes focused on it coming towards her. She’d swing and the birdie would be flung the direction it just came to hit the floor. People cheering as the scoreboard changes with her in the lead.

Junior Gabrielle Riego hasn’t lost a game since badminton has started this season.

Her first go at badminton was her sophomore year. “At first I began playing badminton because I needed the P.E. credits but then it turned into something more,” Riego said “I wanted to be at the top and be the best I could be.”

While it seems like a fun game to play at the park Riego feels it’s a really competitive sport because of their title of Section Champions.

Slowly she’s raising to the top being the only JV girl to make it at semi-finals.

“Before I start playing, whether it’s practice or a game I have to remind myself to be confident because if I go in nervous I tend to make mistakes more often,” Riego said.

Even though it can be nerve racking Riego plans to play every chance she gets and goes to practice every single day.
