WEEKLY SPORTS FOCUS: Christina Martinez
Learning the different clubs in golf like a driver, a long shaft used for long distances especially at the tee-off, to a wedge used for short pitches from the fairway and blasting out of sand bunkers, took junior Christina Martinez a while to learn.
“At first I was clueless, I didn’t know what a wedge was,” she said, “I had no idea.”
Martinez also mentions that transitioning from a softball swing to a golf swing took a lot of practice as well because at times she felt like swinging it like a softball bat. Not only did she have to master her swing but know where to stand around the ball.
She had decided to go for more of a focused game, golf. “It’s harder than you think,” she said, “you have to relax, line up your target, and you have to be precise.”
“It takes a lot of patience and all of your focus.” At times Martinez gets frustrated because she said, “I have a bad swing but it drives me to keep hitting the ball.”
“I wasn’t the best but I went out of my way and went to practice by myself,” she said. “I hope to play in the future.”
She chose to do golf to get another letter for her jacket but ended up enjoying the sport. Martinez said doing golf is a serious game and a different yet fun experience.
“It’s not like a team sport because you get to focus on yourself,” she said, “It’s kind of like a way of life because you want to get to that one place, to that one destination, but you have all these obstacles to get past.”
And she ends with saying, “At the end of the day I’m glad I chose golf.”
