ROBERT MAXSON: Senior adjusts to new hurdle
The sun, wind, and sweat, all working against you. The instant pressure that overcomes the beating heart. The track becomes silent and then the race begins.
Senior, Robert Maxson, has began his first year participating on the track and field team in hurdles and sprints.
“I never considered being apart of track in field because I loved football so much, but I’m glad I decided to try something new,” Maxson said.
However, the relationships he has gained have come fairly easy seeing that his football teammates were the reason for him joining the track team, “Some of my football teammates convinced me to join because they are on the team,” Maxson said. “So they thought I should join.” This helped him to quickly adapt socially.
But with joining a new team comes a new atmosphere. Therefore a new instructor with new ways of teaching and possibly new techniques compared to the sport he is used to playing.
Although his teammates and coach play an active part in his motivation, Maxson realizes that he is his own biggest critic. “Whenever I’m having a hard time I always tell myself to just shake it off and keep moving forward. That’s what keeps me going.”
Half of the work that comes from being apart of a team is being a good teammate. “In the beginning I wasn’t the best at hurdles, but my teammates always told me to keep trying and some even did them with me,” Maxson said. By doing the best he can, he not only puts himself in the position to succeed, but his team as well.
