KARIS CARTER: Freshman reaches above the net to varsity
Varsity team players are usually seniors, students who have played for many years before and continue to show spirit for the sport. Yet, there can be students new to high school that show potential and along the way, make it straight to the top.
Karis Carter, freshman, tried out for volleyball team this year. She wanted to do so since her older sister played the sport and Carter found it fun to watch. Though she had no prior experience with being on a team before, she practiced over summers with her sister since the 7th grade.
“I think I’ve had some skill since the beginning and that I’ve only progressed since then.”
After tryouts, rather than being on the freshman or even junior varsity team, she was placed straight to varsity.
“It made me feel really good but at the same time I was so scared because I’ve never been on a volleyball team,” Carter said. “The fact that it was the varsity team made me feel like, ‘woah, I must be good enough.”
Being on the varsity team made Carter nervous at first. The games were fun but went by a lot faster than other teams due to the intensity. However, she quickly became adjusted to the team due to supportive teammates. Though they were a range of different ages and grades, they were close enough to her.
“I’m really going to miss the seniors because they really helped me become a better player.”
As a freshman, she has three more years ahead of her on the varsity team. She is excited to continue playing the sport next year and hopes to improve more for the future.
“It was different and fun,” Carter said. “Now that the season is over, I feel like I did well as a freshman.”
