AURORA ZAMORA: Aims for improvement in track

She takes a step back, looks at the field,  discus in her throwing hand, and evenly spreads her fingers. To throw the discus with the proper technique she completes one-and-a-half rotation in the ring, while moving forward in approximately a straight line, from the back of the ring to the front. Her proper footwork is vital to produce the speed necessary for a strong throw. And she throws.

Senior Aurora Zamora takes part in the track and field event — discus, and her best discus record was 87 feet.

Zamora has been in track for three years. She has competed in discus and a bit of shot put since her sophomore year and has enjoyed competing in both events since then.

“I remember my sophomore year, I was in JV for shot and discus and in the beginning of the season especially since it was my first year I did horrible at my first meet,” Zamora said, “but as the season progressed at the end — at our final SJAA meet I won first place for discus in the JV division.”

She enjoys track because instead of being separated from every grade level “your always around everyone.” To Zamora track “isn’t that segregated like most sports, you’re always meeting new people especially at the meets,” she said.

But she feels as though “most people don’t really take the throwers seriously” because even she has begun to notice that “not many people know throwing (is) an event, everyone assumes it’s all running but that’s not true,” Zamora said.

The hardest part about track for Zamora is competing because she described it as “you’re not really on a team.” At meets it’s all about “what you can do that’s going to get you ahead,” she said even if you’re going against your own teammates.

And for her last year of track she has decided to go all out. She will improve on her technique and herself in the process. Not only that but she will train hard during conditioning as well as during season. Zamora has set a goal for herself and that is to PR(personal record) for both shot and discus this season.
