ASHLEY BUFFO: Swinging for success

Many students only do a sport their junior or senior year to get the credits for physical education so they don’t have to take the class. However, there are a few who weren’t able to play other years because of something holding them back or possibly not knowing the benefits being on a team can give. ‒ Junior Ashley Buffo is one of those people.

Though she does want the credits, that isn’t the only reason she joined the team.

Other than doing sports with family members on occasion, Buffo has never played on a team inside or outside of school before this year. Now, she’s out on golf course, swinging her club in hopes of getting a hole in one.

Buffo went out to do golf with her uncle when she was 11. He bought her first set of golf clubs and taught her all he knew for the next two years, before her uncle moved to Hawaii for retirement.

The practices she got when she was younger benefits her now on the team. Buffo felt a bit rusty when she first took a golf club in hand. It took her a week to realize she was improving once again.

“I’m getting the hang of playing once again.”

Playing on a high school level team was a new experience for Buffo. It was very different from what she has been used to so far. Still, while it may be foreign to her, she also has a good time playing the sport.

“I’ve only played with family when it’s not as competitive,” Buffo said. “At school, you want to try to be the very best.”
