Why women need more pockets
By now it’s pretty common fare to be disappointed by either the small size of pockets or the lack of any at all in women’s jeans, shorts, dresses and even sweaters. And it’s even more disappointing to find that what you thought was a pocket, was just some stitching to make it look like one.
Although the struggle of small to nonexistent pockets in women’s clothing is a relatively minor issue, compared to the bigger ones that are currently going on, it’s still an issue and an everyday annoyance, especially as phones continue to get larger and larger. This often leads to people just carrying their things around in their hands and getting ridiculously excited when they find a dress with pockets.
While purses do exist for the sole purpose of carrying around items, it’s still a hassle to carry it around and extra money to spend just because you can’t fit a couple of small items into your pockets. Plus you can’t really carry a purse everywhere and it’s a pain to be taking things in and out of the purse everytime you need something compared to the ease of just pulling something out of your pocket and sliding it back in. There’s also the fact, that you can’t really stuff your hands into your purse without looking and feeling quite weird.
The reason for the lack of proper pockets is usually because there are concerns on how the pockets will affect the line of the garment, making it look awkward when worn, since they are usually around the hip area. Sometimes, on tailored pieces or clothing or fancier attire, the pocket will be loosely sewn shut, giving the customer the option of whether or not to risk ruining the shape of the clothing item.
While those concerns are valid, it still doesn’t outweigh the value of having regular pockets on clothing items that won’t lead to a cracked phone screen, another lost chapstick, or having to lug around a purse or pocketbook. Therefore I think manufacturers and designers ought to start adding more pockets to clothing items and make sure that they are well sized, not the small ones that can barely fit a couple of coins. Even if it were to cost them some extra dollars, I think the companies would be able to make it up with the rise in sales of the of the items and still be able to make a profit out of it.
