Fortnite OG has made a nostalgic return, for the second time, reigniting interest among both new players and long-time fans. While this version of OG hasn’t surpassed 1 million concurrent players since its relaunch like the last attempt did, its impact on the gaming community has been undeniable.
Many former professional players such as Ninja and CourageJD have returned to experience the original gameplay, and viewership for Fortnite streams has seen a notable increase.
Players are thrilled to revisit old maps and locations that defined Fortnite’s early success. Iconic weapons from the past have also been reintroduced, adding to the game’s retro charm.
A nostalgic aspect added to the game that I enjoy is the reintegration of older weapons and consumables. These weapons and consumable include:
- The OG pump
- Assault Rifle/Scar
- Supressed SMG
- Rocket Launcher
- Grenade Launcher
- Slurp Juice
- Launch Pad
- Directional Pad
However, the reversion to OG Fortnite also highlights notable differences from the current version. The absence of mechanics like swimming and movement items such as shock waves has changed the game play experience, making rotations more challenging and exposing players to greater risks. Additionally, the maps changes emphasize how far the game has evolved over the years.
For example, a form of movement I highly dislike is no swimming. The ability to swim that is taken away in this game mode is especially frustrating when rotating into the zone and going through places like Loot Lake, which is surrounded by water. Trying to get through this POI by foot leaves you extremely vulnerable for other players to kill you. An alternative way to get through this POI as well as other bodies of water is by building. Getting through Loot Lake using builds is also extremely difficult because by building, you are using at least 350 building materials of the 900 if you start with that.
While OG Fortnite captures the magic of its early days, some players might find the stripped-down game play limiting compared to the more dynamic mechanics of modern Fortnite. Nonetheless, it serves as a refreshing throwback for those looking to relive or discover the game’s roots.
