Pewdiepie’s racist actions finally coming to light

Under intense and stressful conditions, like playing video games, a person’s true nature can come out. In a fit of rage, uncensored and unplanned, the true side to YouTube’s biggest star is revealed once again. It’s not anywhere near the first time, and most likely won’t be the last.

On Sept. 10, during a livestream of a game called “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds,” Felix Kjellberg, better known as “Pewdiepie,” made a shocking outburst to millions of fans. It was in this now deleted video that he used the n-word angrily to another player during a intense moment. His exact words, “What a f—— n—–.” were followed by more strong language, something that isn’t uncommon to any of his viewers.

This isn’t the first time that Kjellberg’s racist commentary and imagery wasn’t followed by great backlash. A little more than 6 months ago he was called out for using Nazi jokes and promoting Nazism. He ended up losing his deal with Disney and his show on YouTube Red, a subscription service that could’ve given the star much more money than he already makes.

The Swedish YouTuber has since made an apology two days later, saying there’s no excuses for what he’s done. Getting caught up in the moment and using the same language he usually hears online were some of the ways he tried to defend himself. “I’m disappointed in myself,” he added. “It seems like I’ve learned nothing from all these past controversies.”

As a former fan or “bro” myself, I can’t say that I’m at all surprised at what has happened. From when I first started watching his videos back in 2013, his humor has hardly changed at all. Though his crude jokes and quips were funny to me before, they’re only immature and inappropriate now. The only reason it being shown that way now is because he’s more popular and people are actually calling him out on it.

A few years ago, before he became YouTube’s number one most subscribed, Pewdiepie still had a large following, but wasn’t at the point where he is now. Like many celebrities would know, words and actions have to be watched carefully to not offend anyone. They’re role models to many and the second they do something wrong, it’s only seconds before an angry tweet is headed their way.

While it’s about time his actions were being spotlighted, I doubt it would do much to stop his fame. If anything, it’ll probably only make him more well known and more people would probably want to watch his videos to see what the buzz is about. Sadly, that’s what’s wrong with the world today.
