On Sunday, October 27, Stagg’s junior varsity coach William Alton Mead Jr., passed away due to lung cancer.
Not just a coach, Mead was a father, brother, and an inspiration to many who had the pleasure to be a part of his life, such as other junior varsity coaches like Mario Thomas Gray, Brent Whiteley, and players on the team like junior varsity quarterback Dario Dominguez. “He didn’t care about one, he cared about all,” said Dominguez.
Mead had been coaching football as well as track and field for years, not only at Stagg but also at Chavez. “I’ve had the honor to work alongside my friend and brother for fifteen plus years,” said fellow coach Gray.
Within his years of coaching he’s helped many kids to improve, to strive and to reach their goals. “He’s helped countless kids throughout Stockton,” said Brent Whitley, as well as helping kids with allies. “Myself and Coach Mead changed a lot of lives together,” said Gray.
Mead is survived by his son and daughter as well as his wife, Cheryl Mead.
