Stagg’s baseball and football fields have gotten major makeovers this fall as crews have finished the process of redoing the turf. This project, which began on August 21, was expected to be completed in October, but took longer to be finalized because it needed to be approved through the district. According to Athletic Director Hung Ngyuen the fields are predicted to be open by January but says, “Cant get you a definitive answer.” The two fields aim to provide a safer and more durable playing surface for athletes.
Baseball Field changes:
According to Varsity baseball Coach Henry, the under alignment of the field is starting to deteriorate as well as the field having patches in many spots. Instead of continuing to fill bigger patches of turf throughout the field, the best idea was to just replace the whole field. Senior Sebastian Ramirez (P/SS) said the field had rips by 1st and 2nd base in which the players would try to cover with glue but students state there wasn’t a point in doing so, as the field would tear again after a game or practice.
Although the field had rough spots, Ramirez stated that the baseball field was in considerably good condition before its remodeling. “It’s probably one of the best fields I’ve ever played on,” he said.
This opportunity given to the players is aimed toward making them optimistic to play on their field again. “This will bring more opportunities and a chance for athletes to be more eager to play on the field,” Sanchez stated. “Hopefully their enthusiasm comes out a bit more, and they see they’re getting something and stay motivated to keep playing,” he said.
Ramirez eagerly added, “ I think having new turf will motivate me and my team to play better this year so we can represent our team because we can’t play bad on a great field.”
Football Field Changes:
According to sophomore Josue Padilla (RB) on the Junior Varsity football team, there were problems with the field such as holes which became a hazard as the possibility of athletes rolling their ankles was brought to attention.
Going into Padillas freshman year he was accustomed to the field as he attended summer conditioning and says, “i consider myself a sentimental person so i really liked the field a lot.”
Padilla says he looks forward to other teams coming to the school and recognizing them for their ability and not just “the team with the s****y field.”
With the field approaching the finish line, Padilla says “im looking forward to making new memories on the field and playing on a new field.”
