If you’re someone that likes action video games, “Borderlands” is an action role-playing first-person shooter game from 2009. Its humorous story was made into a film that came out this year starring Kevin Hart (Ronald), Ariana Greenblatt (Tina) and Cate Blanchett (Lilith). Jack Black also voices Claptrap, a little robot friend to the main characters.

The main plot is about Lilith, the infamous bounty hunter, who was given a job by someone named Atlas, a corporate magnate, to retrieve his “daughter” Tina who isn’t even his real daughter, more like his human creation against her will. When Lilith discovers that, she decides to team up with the bounty hunter also there to retrieve Tina.

The movie takes place on a planet called Pandora, where Lilith is from. After aliens invaded, they left behind all kinds of different technology, like a little robot, Claptrap that was programmed to help Lilith once she got back to her home. The aliens ended up disappearing for no reason, leaving behind a secret vault that people who call themselves Vault Hunters try to open.

The vault can only be opened with the missing last key, but possibly only something related to the aliens called The Daughter of Aritzia can open it. The main cast then end up trying to find whatever the daughter is in a cave full of Pandora Psychos, the ¨villains¨ of the movie, after desperate searching and people trying to take them down.  

I really liked the chaos and the colors, consisting of mostly orangey red, as well as dark but also bright colors. The special effects really represented the game, with the fight scenes standing out to me as being very attention grabbing. The sound effects used a lot of sounds from the game that brought the whole movie together. 

I think that though the plot at the end seemed a little too long, maybe a little longer than it should’ve, the movie really made me want to play the game. But unfortunately, I don’t have access to any game consoles right now.

Overall, it was entertaining. Everyone’s favorite character from the game, Tina, brought a nice plot and a funny personality to the movie. I really liked the ending where they all seem to come together as a family because most of them don’t have a real family. The message was nice, it showed how different people from different backgrounds could come together due to different circumstances. 

As someone that doesn’t play video games, I recommend “Borderlands”. If you need a fun movie, it’s funny and not too long.
