Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Review

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Review

Did you spend your childhood in front of your television, learning combos and secret shortcuts to reach the final boss of your favorite video game? If video games ruled your childhood, then Scott Pilgrim vs. The World definitely should be on your list of movies to watch.

The story follows Scott Pilgrim (played by Micheal Cera), a forgetful, dorky but charming 24 year old, living in Canada. He plays bass in his band Sex Bob-Ombs (smile at the Mario reference) He meets Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), Scott’s 17-year old high school girlfriend. They seem to be quite happy, until Scott meets Ramona.

Ramona Flowers moved from America to “get away from it all”. Scott finds he may be in love with her, forming an ever-clichéd love triangle.

What makes this movie different from every other comedy out there is the references to retro video games. Sure, a lot of movies have them, but this one makes you feel like you’ve stepped into the golden age of video games- the mid-90’s.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is based on a graphic novel, which was originally planned for a movie adaptation when it first came out. The novel is fantastic, but if you normally prefer the book towards movies, then this may be no exception.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a great movie, but it could be better. The references to video games are awesome and the story is great, but the dialogue seems to be lacking in depth and individuality. Bottom line, if you grew up playing video games, you’ll like this movie. If you don’t like video games, then it might not be your cup of tea

      I wouldn’t go THAT far.

The Wizard was created for the sole purpose of selling Nintendo games. Plus, the emphasis was almost entirely on video games, while in Scott Pilgrim, games were an influence. There’s a big difference between the two. Plus, The Wizard was a terrible movie, whereas Scott Pilgrim was awesome.
